Prima edizione, ben completa delle 8 cromolitografie con ritratti di personaggi delle varie tribù di nativi americani e una grande carta geografica dal titolo Map to illustrate Mr. Kane's travels in the territory of the Hudsons's Bay Company. Dopo un soggiorno di studio di 4 anni in Europa, l'Autore ritornò in Canada con l'obiettivo di catturare scene di vita dei nativi americani: «To accomplish this, he traversed, almost alone, the territories of the Red River Settlement; the valley of the Saskatchewan; across the Rocky Mountains; down the Columbia River, the shores of Puget Sound; and Vancouver's Island. The book is a transcript of his daily journal, thrown into the narrative form; and the beautiful engravings are copies of the labor of his pencil» (Field 811); Abbey, Travel 663; Sabin 37007.
