«Bodin came to England with the Duc d'Alencon in 1581, and finding that the 'Republic' was widely read, although in a bad Latin translation, he determined to produce a better translation himself. In doing so, he altered his text considerably and this version, published in Paris in 1586, became the standard one. The Six Books of the Republic went through many editions in the author's lifetime and after, and had an immense influence all over Europe» (PMM 94).
